Is it Necessary to Seal Travertine?
Yes. Do not forget that travertine is a soft, porous stone. It needs the protection that comes with a sealant. It is true that sealing is not going to make it impervious to staining or etching, it can greatly reduce the danger from these and other types of damage.
What Type of Sealant Should and I Use and How Often?
We recommend that you seal your travertine at least once a year – perhaps twice if it is a particularly light-colored stone or if it is in a high-traffic area. Only penetrating sealants should be used – never topical sealants. While a penetrating sealant gets deep into the stone to offer full protection, a topical sealant just sits on the top. It does not provide the same level of protection and can lead to a cloudy, hazy film.
What is the Difference Between Natural and Filled Travertine?
Travertine naturally has many tiny holes. If you choose natural travertine, these holes will not be filled. If you choose filled travertine, the holes will be filled at the factory. There are pros and cons to both options. For example, natural travertine is harder to clean, but filled travertine requires repairs and refills on occasion.
